Few New York buildings make a sharper backdrop for a crowd than the Flatiron Building, and Irving Underhill's April 19, 1917, photograph places a parade in the street beneath its famous triangular façade. The march came less than two weeks after the United States entered the First World War, and the Navy used the moment to recruit. The color halftone was reproduced as a poster, possibly sponsored by the United Cigars Stores Company, and it reflects the mix of civic pride and enlistment appeals that filled American cities in the spring of 1917.
