The caption card gives this glass negative only a name, J.B. Thayer, and the Bain News Service itself noted that the title came from unverified data, so the subject's identity and role remain uncertain. Bain's agency, founded in New York around 1899, sold news pictures to newspapers, and its glass negatives, most of them 5 by 7 inches or smaller, record a wide range of people and events in the early twentieth century. Because the record gives no date, the exact year of the exposure is unknown. Viewers who want to learn more about Thayer should compare the negative with other Bain portraits and with newspaper archives from the period, which may name the sitter and the occasion.
