Johnstown, Pennsylvania, is the setting for this wood engraving of a bridge collapse on Friday, September 14, 1866, that happened as crowds gathered to see President Andrew Johnson and his party. The railroad bridge gave way under the weight of townspeople, killing four and wounding more than 350. Frank Leslie's Illustrated Newspaper ran the scene in its October 6, 1866, issue, drawn by its special artist, C.E.H. Bonwill, who worked from the event itself. Johnstown is better known for the 1889 flood, so this earlier disaster is a reminder that the town's history of catastrophe began well before that.
