Zuni Pueblo, in western New Mexico, is the setting for this view taken looking southeast across the village. John K. Hillers, who worked as a photographer on the United States Geological Survey expeditions led by John Wesley Powell and later became the chief photographer of the Bureau of Ethnology, made the image sometime between 1879 and 1881, a period when he was documenting the Southwest's pueblos and landscapes. The rooftops and terraced adobe masses visible in the frame reflect the multi-story construction typical of Puebloan villages, and the picture offers a rare record of the settlement as it looked in the late nineteenth century.
