Few images from the Lewis and Clark Expedition show the men at close quarters with grizzlies, and this etching does exactly that. It was engraved for Patrick Gass's journal of the expedition, published by Matthew Carey in Philadelphia in 1810, and appears on page 95 of that book. Gass, a sergeant who had served under Captains Lewis and Clark during the years 1804 to 1806, gave a first-hand account of the corps' travels across the West. Bear encounters were a recurring danger on the journey, and the scene reflects how the explorers hunted and defended themselves on the frontier.
