Wisconsin Road Food: Lomira

Driving down Highway 41 from Appleton to Milwaukee, I needed a cup of coffee and a piece of pie to sustain the foodless airplane flight home. Believing only certain billboards, I followed one to: Susie's Home Cooking in Lomira, WI, south of Fon Du Lac. Head west from 41, over the bridge (bypassing the near-highway commercial area) and on the left up the small hill is Susie's.

Nothing earthshaking, just the type of place that the local frequent and everyone kids everyone else. Counter and a dozen tables. Look to be a nice selection of pies (I ended up with carrot cake) and a real home-cooked menu. Buckwagon stew with bison meat, bison burgers, and the usual run of the mill menu of meatloaf, pork chops, etc.

I like these kinds of places, for you can half see into the kitchen area and there is no mystery about what's being prepared. I'll be back for that stew!

Cheers,
Rob Lake
