Well, while our mighty metropolis can't seem to manage it, Madison has a new place called Bandung. It's a small storefront in a minimall, but nicely decorated and comfortable. We weren't very hungry, so shared kari lele, a catfish curry, that was beautifully done. The fish was perfectly cooked and the sauce was tasty and something new as compared to, say, a Thai curry sauce. The nasi goreng, a rice/cucumber/tomato dish wasn't as interesting, but we wanted to try a dish we'd heard of as a defining Indonesian dish. I should day we're not familiar with Indonesian cuisine, so couldn't judge this place's authenticity, but there were a lot of Indonesian students there who seemed highly appreciative. This was some of the best restaurant cooking I've had in a while, and I'll be back for more every time I go to Madison. The menu list lots of Indonesian creations to try, as well as some Thai and Filipino ones. On a snowy Saturday night we had a 45-minute wait, so weekend reservations would be a good idea. Bandung Restaurant 200 Williamson Street Madison 53703 608/255-6910 PS-- In the last few years, Madison has gotten better Lao, Indonesian and Breakfast places than we manage in Chicago. If they ever get top of the line pizza, we're gonna have to stop laughing at them.

Try gado gado if they have it, a classic Indonesian (served through much of SE Asia actually) salad of a sort. I say of a sort because it's very filling. Rojack is the Malayish version and good too. Another dish to try, lobak, served with pai dan (1000 yo eggs) and pickled ginger, though this might be Malay in origin... a favorite appetizer of mine. Sroto, yummy chicken soup, or beef rendang. >This was some of the best restaurant cooking I've had in a while, and I'll be >back for more every time I go to Madison. I'm going to go up to Madison for work, and be there for a week or two...I was wondering about the food situation and might have to beg for more recommendations (via email?) later. To tell you the truth, there are very few Asian restaurants here in Chicago that either us can tolerate. regards, trillium
