German -- Mader's. It's downtown, I don't remember exactly where, but it
        was easy to find.

Mexican -- Conejito's, Sixth & Virginia. (South of downtown, across the river.)
Very small, decor by latino K-Mart, but the food, particularly
the mole, is wonderful and authentic. If you're feeling brave,
have a margarita: this is the source of the One True Margarita.

Beer -- If you're a beer aficianado, try the Water Street Brewery on
Water Street (!). The beer is very good. There's a restaurant and
bar on the premises, but I haven't gone there to eat, so I can't
review the cuisine. FWIW, it's a fiercely yuppie hangout, so YMMV.

Mader's isn't really inexpensive, but it is popular. It's on "Old World" 3rd St. downtown.

How about this. Do you like Thai food?
The King and I is on the corner of 2nd & Wells, right downtown. Moderate prices, very popular. Everyone's favorite seems to be the Volcano Chicken. Give it a try.

Miro's Cafe on Bradford (near Oakland) is a great Serbian restaurant with reasonable prices. During summer you can dine on a lovely outdoor patio. Wish I was there now!

We had Polish food at Cracovia on Lincoln Avenue (Street?) in the old German district. Quite cheap, very deliceous!

Also Joseph Ernst's Cafe on Ogden is excellent

I think one of the best restaurants in Milwaukee (and for that matter, the midwest) is Sanford's. If you have been there, you know what I mean. If not, you are really missing a great opportunity.

Expensive? Yes. Worth it? YES!

Carol,

My top ten favorite restaurants in Milwaukee:

John Ernst Cafe (on Ogden)
Cafe DiSalvo (on Belleview and Downer)
Brew City Barbeque (On Water)
Mongolian BBQ (on Mayfair Road)
The King and I (downtown)
Sangha Thai (Hwy. 100 and Lincoln)
La Fuente (Mexican)
Karl Ratzsch's (yes, I spelled it right)
Elsa's on the Park
Lone Star Texas BBQ
Heinemann's (for breakfast)

YUM!

      Regarding Milwaukee restaurants:

>Cafe DiSalvo (on Belleview and Downer)

Tried it for the 1st time last weekend. Not bad.
Good antipasto. Great Linguini with red clam sauce.

>Brew City Barbeque (On Water)

Just another one of the boring Water Street bars and restaurants.
      Eagans is much better.

>Mongolian BBQ (on Mayfair Road)
>The King and I (downtown)
>Sangha Thai (Hwy. 100 and Lincoln)
>La Fuente (Mexican)

Chinese, Thai, Mexican...Milwaukee doesn't have any good ones.
Samano's in Cudahy is probably the best for Mex...No comment on the
endless array of awful Chinese places here.
There's a new place on 6th and National called Paloma's...the chef
used to work at Sanford. Havn't tried it yet, though.

>Karl Ratzsch's (yes, I spelled it right)

Don't forget to order the Fatty Pork Shank and Lukewarm Gravy.
Sehr gut! The Wallpaper Paste Soup is also quite extraordinary.

>Elsa's on the Park

Decent hamburgers. Great fries. Best martini in town.
Prepare yourself to be stared at upon entering...to see if
if you "measure-up", dahlink. [ugh!] Great place to meet local
      TV celebrities and lawyers.

>Lone Star Texas BBQ
>Heinemann's (for breakfast)

      C'mon...Lone Star?..HEINEMANNS? How about:

      Sanford
      Steven Wades
      Steven Wades Delafield
      L' Etoile [Madison]
      Red Circle Inn [Nashotah]
      Manniaccis [Fox Point]

Its true that Milwaukee has many bars and restaurants...most of them
are very average at best. The Milwaukee Journal food critic has
apparently become so shell-shocked by the mediocrity that he gives
EVERYTHING three stars. If he gives something two...you know it
must be simply awful. I personally think Ratsches is one of the
absolutely worst excuses for a restaurant I've ever seen. I lived
in Germany for many years and while not impressed with German food
in general, I believe it is POSSIBLE to do well. Ratsch's is awful.
They've got the regular tourist trade and the regular Milwaukee
German trade so they'll stay in business for 100 MORE years...but
if you're travelling to Milwaukee and are interested in a serious
restaurant...not just in American women dressed in German clothes
serving you greasy, disgusting food and lots of beer...try
Sanford or Steven Wades. You'll be glad you did.

And while you are here, be sure to drink the LOCAL micro-beers..
Sprecher and Lakefront Breweries both make EXCELLENT brews..as good
      as anything I tried in Germany...[almost :) ].

Some of my friends and I have made several trips to Milwaukee (I live in the Chicago burbs) just to visit a restaurant. It's a mexican restaurant called Conejito's Place. They have killer margarita's and inexpensive food. I believe its located at Virginia and 6th. Not exactly a fine dining experience, but we have always had a good time.

Having eaten in a lot of places around the country, I would say Sanford's
is "a best" for more than the Midwest. It's been more than a year and a half, and I can still remember my meal there. Too bad it's such a long way from California!
