(Avoiding the singles bars) There are a lot of really good places to eat around here, and most of them are not singles bars. I have ended up many times eating dinner alone, and/or having a drink alone, (my S.O. travels too often) and have never felt too out of place anywhere. That said, I do have a few comments before I start listing places. 1) When I am alone, I often sit at the bar rather than at a table. This has been know to result in people sitting next to me and talking, but I've never been truly bothered, and if they get too pushy, well, that's when you ask the bartender for help. If you were to sit at a table, I bet that you wouldn't have people talking to you. 2) Not knowing what kind of food you want, or where in the city you want to eat is going to make this a bit difficult to answer... if you have an clarification on food preferences or neighborhoods, post again (or email), and maybe I'll have some better ideas. So here goes... B.Smiths at Union Staion: New Southern. Good food, pretty space. The Dubliner: N. Captial St (across from Union Station) Food is pretty good, music is a lot of fun. Full of friendly people, not a pickup joint. Live Irish music. Mr. Yungs: 6th St NW, between G & H, in Chinatown. Very good food. Pizzeria Paradisio: Dupont Circle, P St NW, between 20th & 21st Sts. GOOD pizza. Il Radicchio: Wisconsin Ave in Georgetown, and 17th St NW. Good Italian food. Cafe Luna: P St NW, between 16th & 17th Sts. Pizza, Pasta, sandwiches. Good food. Luna Diner: Conn. Ave, just below Dupont Circle. Classic diner food, some new American style food. Good. Zorba's: 20th St, just N of Dupont Circle. Cheap Greek. Cafe Parma: Conn. Ave NW, just below Florida Ave. Good Italian. Cashion's Eat Place: Columbia Rd NW, in Adams-Morgan. Delicious food. MAKE RESERVATIONS !! Not cheap, worth every penny. The Grill from Ipanema: across from Eat Place. Brazilian Steakhouse. Not cheap, great food. (Actually, there are a lot of really great restaraunts in Adams-Morgan. you can eat well by walking around and choosing places by looking at the menus.) Melati in Cleveland Park: Indonesian. inexpensive, good food. And right up the street from... Nanny O'Brians: I've never eaten there, but it's a great place to have a drink and listen to music (yes, another Irish place.) Mrs.Simpson's: Conn. Ave, just below the zoo. American food, quite good. Murphy's : 24th St, right at the Woodley park Metro stop. I promise, the last Irish place on the list. Good burgers and sandwiches, nice music, nice people. City Blues: Conn Ave, at the Woodley Park Metro stop. Good basic food, good music. Lebanese Taverna: Right next to City Blues. Excellent food. Go early. The lines get long, and they don't take reservations. Mama Ayesha's Restaraunt(formerly Calvert Cafe): Calvert St, about a block and a half from the Woodley Park Metro. Good middle eastern food. So, there's a short list of my ideas. Just remember, eating alone is not that unusual, and there are tons of great places to eat here. Enjoy your visit.
