Head up route 50 towards D.C. (inside the beltway). When you get to Seven Corners (where rt 7 crosses 50) if you look to the left, you will see a shopping center. Actually you will see several, but the one you want is behind some others. It can still be seen from the road though. ANYWAY... The name of the center is "Eden" and is the place for oriental foods, groceries, etc. It is an entire shopping center with food stores and restaurants (with ducks and other stuff hanging in the windows). I am not sure which road it is actually on (I think it is Wilson blvd), but it is right there at Seven Corners. There are also a lot of Korean-owned food stores in the area (some also on rt 50 inside the beltway). Sorry, don't know much about the Greek and Italian areas. Question- where to shop in VA/DC/MD

(Queen Bee is an excellent and cheap Viet restaurant; Atami is a quite good Japanese place with $25 all-you-can-eat sushi). There are a number of places along Wilson Blvd between Seven Corners and Roslyn. Some of the ones in Clarendon proper seem to be disappearing as evil, tasteless developers put up office complexes. There's also Chinatown, in DC: centered on 7th and H St, NW. It's not as big as many city's, but it offers plenty. There's a place in Rockville, MD, called Maxim's (I think) which is a fairly large Asian grocery store with other non-grocery items. The DC area is also fortunate to have a lot of Thai restaurants, if you're into that. As to Greek: there was a small market called Skenderis on Connecticut Ave in Dupont Circle above the Zorba's Cafe. I don't know if it's still there any more -- a friend of mine couldn't find it, but she may have just missed it. Sorry, I don't know about Italian places, markets or delis. There's a reasonable though not spectacular one at Eastern Market (7th Street off Pennsylvania in Capitol Hill): Prego. Provisions, next door is good too. (Unrelated, but a charming Russian deli, Misha's, next door to them, too: The Stalin Special -- ``we tell you what you're going to eat''). If you find a good Italian deli, *please* let me know; we've been looking for a good source of Mascarpone cheese for a while but only find little tiny overpriced tubs of it -- nothing compared to what's available in Philly! (or Baltimore I imagine). Other Stuff: There's the farmers market itself at Eastern Market. Best time to go there is Saturday morning. There's also a larger and cheaper farmers market in the RFK Stadium (12 blocks from Eastern Market) parking lot on Saturdays, maybe Sundays too; not so many yuppies so the prices are lower. As you might have guessed, I live on (the fringes of) Capitol Hill, so my recommendations are biased from what I know. There are other farmers markets around town, but I don't know of them specifically. You should check Larimers on Connecticut Ave in Dupont Circle -- not exactly what you're looking for, but despite their small size, they have a rather interesting selection of things. I'd avoid Sutton Place Gourmet, locations all around the place. Overpriced, pretentious, yuppie. Quality? Tough to tell. Any other questions? Drop me a line. Hope this helps. Looking forward to the summary! ============================================================ Message for rlong
Bert, There should be some good Asian markets in the Arlington area; since I only recently got a car I haven't checked them out yet. If you get into DC there is a good Chinese market in DC's Chinatown (which is otherwise pretty shabby...) called Da Hua...it is one the main street (H NW I think) in the same block as the Gallery Place metro stop. Another place worth checking out in DC is Eastern Market. This is a turn of the century farmer's market on Capitol Hill. It's a block long brick building with stalls inside selling meat, poultry, fish, sausage, etc. Outside along the street is an awning where farmers and produce wholesalers (more of the latter unfortunately) pull up on Saturday. It's quite a scene on Saturday's, actually....the location is 7th Street SE between Independence Avenue and C Street. Hope this helps..... Long-distance netting, I see... Well, where in Fairfax are you? I just moved away from McLean after a childhood gloriously wasted there. For Oriental food, of course there's Chinatown in DC, but if you'd prefer something nearer, there's Eden Center in Arlington-- more Vietnamese than Chinese, but if you're just after generic Asian food, that shouldn't matter much. Eden is a whole shopping center of Vietnamese stores, so you should be able to find most Asian groceries there. It's on the far side of Sycamore Road, past the East Falls Church Metro station. Afraid I don't know much about Mediterranean supplies, but there's a Carnegie Deli somewhere in the Tysons area. Also, the Someplace Special (also known as Gourmet Giant) supermarket in McLean has a lot of hard-to-find groceries, like Vegemite. (yum!) Hi Bert, There is a Greek festival each year in a predominantly Greek neighborhood on the 12 - 1 O'clock position on the beltway. Sorry I can't be more specific, but I remember that when I lived in Sterling, I used to drive by the area and see the signs on my way back from Johns Hopkins. It's a nice area for sightseeing so take a drive around there one weekend and see if you can't spot some Greek restaurants or deli's. Take time to go to the Mormon Temple visitors center while your up that way. Well worth the stop. There is a nice park around it so if you wait for warmer weather it is a beautiful spot for a picnic. My family and I truly enjoyed the time we lived there. Regards, Stan
