The Pita House, somewhere around the 300 block of Cameron Street. Very small place, Middle Eastern food. (be sure to try the foul appetizer).

Old Town Alexandria

We've had good food at the Bamiyan restaurant on King St. (Afghani cuisine). Another favorite is the 219 restaurant, also on King. The downstairs is modestly priced, and we occasionally eat at the bar upstairs. The regular dining room is a bit too costly for our budget; the one time we tried it, we left happy with the food, but over a $100 poorer. Hard Times cafe is cheap for the area, but you must really love chili to enjoy it even a little. Ecco is a local favorite, count on it being packed toward the end of the week, and make a reservation. Great pasta, respectable wine list, and a menu you can work around if you want to eat on the cheap for dinner. Dinner prices are often more than double lunch prices, so some of the better places are a quite a bargain (relatively speaking) for lunch. I live & work in Old Town, and have been to most places. Try the tiny Le Refuge, on the 100 block of North Washington; they might have their marvelous cassoulette on their menu now that the weather's turned cold. The atmosphere is bistro, a bit county, and very French in a delightfully, authentic casual way. The Greek resteraunt (the name escapes me but it's the only one) on King Street (800 block?) is quite good if you like the cuisine, their seafood dishes are usually quite good, and they are very nice about sauces on the side or special requests about preparation. King Street Blues (located, oddly enough, on the 100 block of North St Asaph) is fun if you have a yen for attitude and roadhouse food (po' boy sandwiches, meat loaf & mashed taters, that sort of thing). My favorite quick lunch is at East Wind, a French/Vietnamese place (700 or 800 block of King) that has, alas, seen better days. The lunch specials and the noodle dishes are good however, and I am particularly fond of a meal comprised of Siagon Soup and an order of Garden Rolls (veggies & shrimp rolled up in rice crepes with a peanut dipping sauce). I suggest Madelaine's on King across from the Super Crown and down from Starbucks and Chesapeake Bagel Bakery. It's a cafeteria style "french" place but is reasonable and tasty. Also pretty popular for having been open about 4 weeks. Suggest the Chesapeake Bagel Bakery for breakfast foods, maybe lunch. Good bagel sandwiches. -Richard [email removed]
