I reccommend the Russia House in Herndon VA. Very nice place, great food, right (elegant) atmosphere for what you are looking for. I liked the chilled flavored vodkas, the ceaser's salad made fresh at tableside, and very well prepared main courses. Price tag $100 to $150 for a dinner for two with drinks and wine.

If you are looking for Italian, I like Da Domenico's in Tysons Corner VA. Great food, but more crowded. Price tag $100 for dinner for 2, drinks and wine.

Both places are appropriate for what you want to wear, and the right atmosphere for a special occaison.

For something more casual and comtemporary try Copelands on RT 7 near
395. Cajun style food, great mixed drinks, fun without being rowdy type atmosphere. A man will not be overdressed in a suit here (black tie would be, though. Then again I really don't go to places requiring black tie).

Hope this helps.

I like Normandie Farms in Potomac for fancier outings. Some people really like L'Auberge Chez Francois in Va. but that apparently requires very advanced reservations. Another recommendation someone made was King's Contrivance out near Columbia.

Loryn,

Our favorite anniversary haunt is L'auberge Chez Francois (in Great Falls, VA) It's alsatian/french cuisine, and the food is the best I've had in the area. VERY romantic atmosphere!! All the "fancy" trimmings, excellent and solicitous service, prixe fixe multicourse or a la carte dinner, and a great wine list. They are perpetually on the "best in the area" list of Washingtonian Magazine. The only thing missing at Chez Francois is after dinner dancing (but you could go elsewhere after dinner for that ... we've had a hotel room and taken the CD player to make our own music for dancing after dinner:)
