No, no, no... If you like Japanese food (and have ever eaten any decent Japanese food), DO NOT EAT AT SAMURI !!!! They suck!!! Also don't eat up the street at Japan Inn - even though the Washingtonian magazine claims they have the best Japanese food in Washington, they suck too.

I would recommend Mr. Smiths or J Pauls for fun atmosphere and decent food. They are both on M St. The best way to find a restaurant is to wander up and down M St. until you find a menu that appeals to you - most of the restaurants in Georgetown are decent.

The only Indonesian restaurant in Georgetown (that I know of) is called Sarinah Satay House, @1338 Wisconsin Ave (between N and O Sts). It's not really in a basement, per se, but does have a garden in the back. If the weather's nice, eat out there. I'll agree, it's definitely worth a trip.

Paolo's is the best place to eat in G-town for great service, very good food, and a cool atmosphere. Hands down, no contest. Dan.

I believe the name is Au Pied du Cochon.

It is a fun place. Great if it is 11 o'clock at night and raining, as they serve feel-good food ( I usually have their onion soup, so you'll know what I mean).

I've heard, however, that people who used to love the place in the 1970's are unhappy with it today because:

      it is more expensive now
it is less dirty and grimy now
it is, generally speaking, less of a "dive" now

Once I went there when the Escape From the CIA book was being signed there (one of the defections apparently took place in the restaurant). I didn't know about the book signing. I just wanted to show a friend of mine a good place to eat. We stood in line briefly. The maitre'd approached and asked us to tell anyone who came in after us that they had missed the special. We did not know what he meant. It turned out that the special was lobster with appetizer, dessert and wine---gratis! The waiter ended up leaving a bottle of wine on our table (they seem to leave bottles at tables frequently), and we ended up leaving a tip appropriate to what we would have paid had we bought the meal that we received for nothing.

Also try India Gate, which is in Adams Morgan (walking distance, I would say.)
