My favorites are Tachibana in McClean and Sushi Ko in Georgetown. IMHO Tachibana is the best. Neither are cheap but quality is superb!

There is a sushi place on P street around 21st but I can't remember it's name (I think it starts with a J). It has a funky atmosphere with Sumo wrestling videos.

Cafe Asia is located on 19th between L & M. They have a nightly happy hour during the week with $1 per piece sushi.

Gotta agree with the post below. Tachibana if probably one of the best Japanese restaurants in the DC area. Another one that is equal if not better is Makoto on McArthur Blvd. near the Safeway. You'll need reservations and I like the counter seats the best. If atmosphere is what you're after, Makoto definitely delivers!

BTW, the restaurant you were thinking of below is Cafe Japone.

I like Mikado the best, up on Wisconsin Ave, about 42nd street. Been going there for close to 30 years.

The place on P Street that someone mentioned here is named Sakana, and it is a bargain. They do a nice vegetarian sushi, too, for people who go "Ew-w-w-" at the thought of eating raw fish.

I respectfully disagree about Tachibana. I have never had a good meal there, either at the present location or in the old place in Arlington. The maki fall apart; the service, if not surly, is either indifferent or confused; and the non-sushi items on the menu are mediocre. Nevertheless, I recognize that Tachibana has many adherents who, no doubt, otherwise are fine and sensible people.
