If I'm recalling my street numbers correctly (and you're in NW) then you will be very near Dupont Circle, the gay mecca of DC and one of the hotter restaurant areas. > I would like any suggestions on restaurants. I like authentic > Chinese/Viet/Thai, I also like central European, local specialties, seafood. As far as Thai goes, Bua (very near 17th & P) is good and reasonably priced. If you are arriving this week, the local Thai restarurants are all advertising in the _Post_ as part of a "Thai Food Week" they're promoting. Straits of Malaya on 18th is very good. A personal favorite of mine is Lauriol Plaza at 1801 18th (if I recall correctly) which features Spanish food (the Masitas [sic, probably] de Puerco are particularly good). > Please post advice on places in the general area. Thanks Adams Morgan, not very far at all from where you're going to stay, is another food mecca. Cities, which is a restaurant that changes its menu about quarterly, goes for a theme city of the world and replicates "local" menus. It's been very good the few times I've been there. Several excellent Ethiopian restaurants, Meskerem and Red Sea, are both in Adams Morgan. Kramerbooks & Afterwords Cafe is a fun place to eat. I've generally liked the food there, with rare exceptions, but expect the service to be uneven at best. It's just north of Dupont circle. You will not be lacking for choices where you're staying or in the DC metro area in general. It's one of the best food cities around. Brian

I'll say that Bua is really good Thai. For Chinese, City Lights of China is good, but in general, for Chinese, I don't think Dupont Circle. Another good pan-Asian place is Raku. Italian: BeDuCi. It's good to browse the restaurants. The greatest concentrations are on P Street between 19th and 21st, on Connecticut between P and S, and on 17th Street between P and R. You might also want to wander through Adams Morgan, the next neighborhood north of Dupont Circle, on 18th Street from S all the way up to Columbia Road. All kinds of ethnic restaurants.

In addition to the other suggestions (I'm a fan of Sala Thai which is on that block) you may want to try Teaism 2 blocks away on R Street. Great place for breakfast if you do not mind tea instead of coffee for a change. The Sausage, Nan and Raita are a particular favorite of mine. Lunch and dinner are also swell. For a special dinner Nora's is by my lights the best restaurant in the neighborhood (and probably the most expensive). Enjoy, Jim [email removed] remove caps to reply
You are within a block of several good or great restaurants: Great: Pesce (20th & P). The seafood here is wonderful. Joint venture by Roberta Donna (DC's best Italian Chef) and Jean Louis Pallidin, former best French Chef, now in Las Vegas). Go for something different. This is probably my favorite restaurant in DC. Obelisk: fixed price dinner. Not much choice, but excellent. Also one of my favorites. Sala Thai--owned by same people as Bua. I like Sala Thai better, but neither are at the top of my favorite Thai restaurants in DC, but they're the best in that area. Pizzario Paradiso: This takes pizza several steps above most. (Obelisk and PP are across the street from Pesce. They're in the same building--same owner/chef. BeDuCi (Below Dupont Circle). Very good Mediterranean--21st and P. Friendly place. Someone recommended Bacchus. It has recently changed hands and I thing gone considerably downhill. Tiramisu is in that area--I haven't been to it, so can only say that people praise it. Most of the recommendations on the other side of the circle are not worth the walk (Iron Gate, Bua, Il Raddicchio), but the Tabard Inn might be. I'd stay away from Pan Asian Noodle. That was a good restaurant at one time. Now tired. Ooodles Noodles on 20th St (I believe) much much better. Someone recommended Kinkead's. That's certainly one of the best seafood restaurants, probably in US. Robert Kenkead has won many awards. I'd still vote for Pesce, if only doing one. Oh, I forgot to mention Gabriel's in the Barcelo hotel at 20th and P. The Sunday brunch there is my favorite in town and tapas most every night is great. Gabriel's food is a fusion of southwestern, spanish, and who knows what? The sunday brunch is great because it's reasonable, plus you get to try so many interesting things. Stay away from the traditional eggs, sausages, etc. (not bad, but why fill up on that?) -John Wheeler Someone wrote: > > Hello, > I am going to be in downtown DC (2000 block, P Street) for several days on > business.
