For breakfast in Dupont Circle:

The Childe Harold on 20th st. a block and a half north of the circle. Pretty good food, reasonably priced.

If you're into a more "greasy spoon" diner kinda atmosphere, try Trio's on 17 and Q.

In Adams Morgan:

Avignion Freres on Columbia Rd. between Ontario and 18th streets. OK food, reasonably priced.

Not like it used to be before it was sold a few years back. My parents used to go there in 1963.

Carol:

In the Washington,DC metro area, there is a great place called "Bob and Edith's" in Arlington, VA. The line is out the door on weekend mornings and at the bar rush at about 3am.

The atmosphere isn't much. Think small town diner, you know a jukebox, booths, counter, black and white photos and plaques on the walls which commemorate softball team wins and such. The place seats maybe 80 people total depending on how many can squeeze into a booth at a time.

Go for the belgian waffles. They're huge and are covered with blueberries and whipped cream. (I didn't say go every day...) Plenty of coffee and you're set for the day. I'm a person who likes breakfast at night so this 24 hour place is great. Omlettes and BLTs are terriffic as well.

Two other places which make my list are:

The Olde College Diner (in State College, PA. Try the grilled stickies. Split sticky buns buttered and grilled.)

The Calvert Grill (in Alexandria, VA. They make a terriffic omlette and on Sundays, Eggs Chesapeake which are basically eggs benedict but with crab cakes instead of canadian bacon. Also french toast stuffed with cream cheese and served with fruit.)

Thanks for letting me share! Good luck!
