I can only mention two places - well, yes, three: 1) Rocklands, on Wisconsin Ave near Calvert (just up from Austin Grill). "Yuppie BBQ" but good quality, a great assortment of sauces, friendly service (counter service, not a sit-down meal). 2) Old Glory, on M Street near Wisconsin in Georgetown. Basically a trendy bar, but a variety of BBQ. 3) In Alexandria, on Duke Street, near Generous George's and Hechinger, is a small BBQ: Kelly's? They make surprisingly good BBQ, since they seem to be run by Chinese. Probably none of these can compare to what you've had elsewhere, but they do help pass the time. -Peter Pulsifer

BBQ
I really beleive that there is no great barbecue in the DC area except homemade. Three Pigs in McLean can be tasty. I just rely on bringing 5 pounds back from the Silver Pig in Lynchburg, VA each time I visit the kin there. Cheers, Rick
I really like BBQ Country in Herndon, VA. They roast their meat over a hickory fire all day and offer mild and spicy sauces. Once or twice the meat has been slightly over-cooked, but most of the time is is very flavorful. I have to agree with Robin Garr, tho, the best BBQ we've ever had was when we were driving thru Louisville, KY and stopped at a place called the West Kentucky Barbeque. YUM! TAD

My personal favorite is Levi's on Indian Head Highway (Rt 210?) in Oxen Hill. Its mostly carry=out but they have tables, too. They serve North Carolina style BBQ and it is outstanding. Very moderately priced. The chooped bbq is the most succelent I have ever tasted. A friend of mine recently recommended Rocklands on Wisc. Ave. I was totally unimpressed. I thought it was overpriced, not very much food and not all that tasty. They did have an impressive selection of hot sauces, however. david
The best BBQ I've ever had has been in Memphis. They serve both the usual moist sauce as well as a unique dry-spiced variety. When you're after good BBQ in the Rockville area, don't forget O'Brien's BBQ on Gude Drive. I was over there last week, and it was excellent as usual.
I hope I don't strain my credibility here, but you should probably give RH&B another try sometime. I think they're surprisingly good. I often get there food to go, since the ambience of the yuppie bar leaves something to be desired. Now, here are two other ideas: Johnny Boy's off the main drag (Indian Head Hwy?) in Laplata, MD. You have to drive but that truly is the best BBQ I've found east of Kansas City. It's a take-out stand with a few picnic tables scattered by the parking lot. Great sauce. Bernie's, in the basement of Union Station. I know, food court bbq, how great can it be? But, actually, this place is pretty good, and it is texas-style. Stay away from the fries, though. Also, Austin Grill in Old Town Alexandria occassionally has Tejas style BBQ.

Texans will be disappointed, but I was disappointed by my visit to Tolbert's in Dallas. The BBQ Country folks are really from Kansas, and the food reminds me a lot of a place called Biffle's Smokehouse in Concordia MO (near KC). The chili at BBQ Country is especially good. I've found the chicken to be occasionally undercooked, but the ribs are head and shoulders above Red Hot & Blue, and you don't have to look at all those pictures of Lee Atwater with Sam & Dave. I can think of three places in Seattle with better BBQ than BBQ Country, but there aren't very many things that I can't say that about. They also have a location in Centerville, I believe. ____ Jeff Carroll Entropic Research Laboratory, Inc. (202)547-1420 [email removed]

Yes, and that is where I usually eat. It is on Route 29 between Route 28 and I-66, near the Centreville Library. It's in the shopping center right behind the Lone Star.
I've heard stories about people driving by on 29, smelling this BBQ smell, and then poking around until they found it.Hello all, I've followed this thread on BBQ and I thought that I would offer my DC area recommendation: "The Canopy" restaurant, located on East Gude Drive, in Rockville, MD. This is a very simple place, nothing fancy, but it offers some excellent BBQ!! It has received several recommendation from local publications (Wash. Post, etc.) Also, if you are ever traveling to Virginia Beach via I-64, stop at *Pierce's Pit* (just north of Williamsburg). Absolutely the best BBQ in the Old Dominion! A wall full of awards and write-ups will offer evidence. If you order the Jumbo BBQ sandwich, be certain to get the cole slaw *on* the sandwich and an order of hush puppies! Happy eating. Steve Toigo

Pierce's has marvelous hush puppies at their Lightfoot location (the same exit from I-64 that I use to get to Williamsburg Pottery outlets). Exit I-64 at the Rt 646 exit, and go north/east on Rt 60. It's about 1.5 miles down the road. But that dining room they added about 5 years ago is strictly for wimps; you should sit at the concrete picnic tables outside to get the real experience! You can also get to it from the Camp Peary exit, but there are more pitfalls if you go the wrong direction at _that_ exit :-) Pierce's also has a location at that waterfront mall in downtown Norfolk (Waterplace? Riverplace? I forget the name). Unfortunately, their contract there does not allow them to serve hush puppies. They transport the BBQ daily from Lightfoot. Pierce's serves pulled pork, Tennessee-style bbq.
I fully concur re BBQ Country in Herndon. There is a sign there saying to inquire about franchising (don't I remember that? I THINK so!?!?) -- I wonder if there are any other units anywhere.
Found the very best BBQ , after eons of searching-----
Smoke Daddys
1bout 1800 West Division on the northside of the street. Not fancy like the Ritz but the food and service and prices are euphoric. _ _ Eliyahu Ross, H.A.H.

OK Corral, in Seattle. It's on Greenwood at about 87th St.
No menu, no ambience. The place looks like the front office for a junk yard. But the proprietor (Otis) makes some serious BBQ. The available items vary, and might include ribs, chicken, links, catfish. If you ask for a "Hookup" they will give you a sample of everything coming off the smoker that night. Plus maybe some greens, potato salad, beans, and good cornbread.
