I'm partial to the Stowhof located in Stowe, Vermont for the epitomy of romance. Fine cuisine, a fantastic mountain view while you dine, and an eclectic and scrumptious dessert buffet served in an adjoining room with a 12 foot fireplace and large over-stuffed armchairs to lose yourself in. The Stowehof is actually an Inn, so if you'd like to leave the dining room and lazily amble upstairs for a respite than you're in the right place. The rooms are designed in an old-world, nordic style and most have exqusite views, fireplaces and canopy beds. Don't forget to stop for an after dinner drink in their tiny, cozy pub. It has a lovely old mahoghany bar, a beautiful stone fireplace, and a low ceiling evocative of taverns you'd find in England or Ireland.

If you want a preview of the dining room, rent the movie "4 Seasons" with Alan Alda. Pieces of it were filmed at the Stowehof.

Good luck!

Hemingway's (Killington, VT) -- ask to sit in the wine cellar (bring a sweater). You won't find a more romantic spot than this.

Prince & The Pauper (Woodstock, VT) -- rustic/romantic, rather than upscale/romantic, but the food is amazing

Barnard Inn (Barnard, VT) -- again, sorta rustic/romantic

I second the recommendation for Stowehof as well...great place.

I've been to the Corner House Inn in Sanwich, NH. It's a well maintained, country inn/restaurant in a sleepy NH village not too far from Rte. 93. Traditional NE fare that's very good, with great service and ambiance. There are rooms available at the Inn, but I've never stayed there.

Good luck!

In Vermont, try Mary's (on Rte. 116, outside of Bristol). They are a B&B/restuarant, with excellent food, a good wine list and excellent service. They are in a renovated farmhouse, with fireplaces in two rooms. Mary's is one of my favorite restaurants anywhere.

You might also like The Hancock House in Hancock, VT. Hancock House is an Inn, located right on the green in Hancock. They are reservation-only, so be sure to call ahead. The food was less memorable than Mary's, but the restaurant was very comfortable. The dining rooms were quiet, and the hostess seated folks away from other diners, so if you're looking for a quiet, romantic dinner, this might be the place.

Hope this helps,
Hound
