It's a bit beyond high, but The Creel Inn on St. Margaret's Hope (Orkneys) is incredible. Using all local ingredients (fish, meat and produce), the food is too good to describe. We had no idea what we were walking into, and ate every meal we could there before we left. It's also located on a truly beautiful (and extremely romantic) inlet off the sea. My all time most memorable restaurant meal. I guess the chef trained with some heavy hitters in LA, but returned to this island where he grew up because he loves it so. The hostess Winnie is a sweetie, too. The islands are really remote, and we barely saw any one that far up. Hope you make it! BTW - The prices are extremely reasonable ($40-50 US for appetizers, main course for two and a bottle of wine). (And stop at the llama farm on your way to Scrabster!) We went there three times on a short visit to Orkney in March '94. On the first evening there were only the two of us and Alan Craigie - the Chef owner. It was almost like having a top chef cook for you in your own home - a real find. Off season the prices are the bargain you quote. Did you visit the Highland Park Distillery?
