There are loads of decent restaurants around here, especially in the Soho area just to the east of Regents Street (which runs from Oxford Circus to Piccadilly Circus). Chinatown is nearby as well, just to the south of Shaftesbury Avenue.

For English food, the closest might be modern British cuisine, which you'll find at Lindsay House in Soho (Romilly Street). I haven't been there but have heard glowing reports. RK Stanleys specialises in sausages (if it's still there in Little Portland Street, just north of Oxford Street).

For good fish and chips, the Rock and Sole Plaice in Endell Street in Covent Garden looks good, but is not so close to the area you want.

You might also like Andrew Edmunds in Lexington Street and Circus in Upper St James Street, both in Soho, although they're more modern European.

Good Italians I've eaten in include Spiga in Wardour Street, and the other day I was in one of the Chinese restaurants I visit regularly - Poons in Leicester Street (just off Leicester Square).

I've reviewed both of these and loads of others in the area in my website (URL below).

I haven't eaten in or reviewed any Aberdeen Steakhouses.

Steakhouse? Avoid avoid avoid

I can't remember the details but the hotel next to Marble Arch tube station has a good carvery which is several roasts and british trimmings such as stuffing, roast potatoes, bread sauce, gravy, etc (This is on Oxford Street)

It *might* only be open at lunchtimes - and even then only at weekends....

The Windmill Pub in Mill St W1 (off Maddox St) has an excellent restaurant and quite reasonable prices too. You can see their menu on www.thewindmill.info

Yep - I was thinking of the Cumberland. I've been going there with family on and off for twenty years for a big English carvery. You can probably ring them up to ask when they are doing the carvery and how much, and whether there is a dress code

:-)

Try Rocket (an inexpensive Pizza Restaurant) or Hush (expensive but good food, owned by Roger Moore's son) both are on Lancashire Court which is a TINY street off Brook Street (which leads off the famouse New Bond Street).

Both of these are excellent restaurants but you might find it hard to get into Hush as it's very busy.

If you have a Palm handheld subscribe to Vindigo, otherwise pick up a copy of Time Out when you get here. Just don't go anywhere too touristy!

Just remembered, The best Chinese in London is Hakkasan on Hanway Place but book it's very busy and quite expensive.
