Hi,

I just spoke to my parents, and they reckon it's fairly difficult to get traditional fare, but :

In Stromness, I recommend the The Hamnavoe Retaurant, The Royal Hotel, followed by the Stromness Hotel, and then The Ferry Inn(www.ferryinn.com).

In Kirkwall the West End Hotel apparently has a good reputation.

If you're driving, there is the Merkister Hotel, next to the Loch, or the Foveran Hotal near Kirkwall on the Orphir road - (take your credit card !! - Expensive).

On a Sunday Afternoon, or some weekdays, Harray Stores do High Tea, with localled baked scones, bannocks etc. Nearby, Dounby Stores sells local produce.

For local produce, My Mum works at Orkney Herring in Stromness, and I recommend Hand Rolled Salmon Fillets in a Honey/Mustard sauce mmmmm.....although the Crayfish tails in a Sweet chilli sauce comes a close second. - Some of this and the regular stuff is available in Costco, or I've seen a little bit in Tescos. Also there is Stockans Oatcakes, Highland Park & Scapa whiskies, and many other - see (http://www.orknet.co.uk/client.htm)

The creel retaurant (http://www.orknet.co.uk/creel/main.htm) is also very highly recommended, but is a bit further out of Kirkwall.

Any specific question, mail me, or leave a message here - I'll try and help

As well as the Creel in St Margarets Hope, I can firmly recommend Woodwick House in Eveie. Yes, it's a drive from either Kirkwall or Stromness, but we had a week's excellent food there last year.

Woodwick is now an Art Gallery, with a cafe on the side, serving a mixture of salads, and home baking - not even chips !!. Expensive too. I had Salmon salad - 1 piece of salmon, some coleslaw, and a bit of veg, for £4-50 - Nice presentation though.

Sorry, I was thinking of what used to be Woodwick Restuarant - Which was converted to the Gallery/Cafe.

As you say woodwick house is down the road - See
http://www.orknet.co.uk/woodwick/ for details - Never been in there but is recommended by friends.

PS - My Auntie used to do the home baking for Woodwick (Not House!), when it was a thriving Restuarant doing High teas etc.

cheers
