Some good stuff up there, particularly the Diwana Bhel Poori house.

I keep hearing that for a cheap Indian meal Masala Zone down in Soho is pretty good- but haven't yet checked it out. Very cheap Thalis apparently. Anyone been?

Is that on Whitfield Street? If so, I was there a few weeks back and had one of the worst meals I can remember in recent years (or was it Diwam Mogol?)

Not to Masala Zone, but I've been to Mela on Shaftesbury Avenue - very good country style cooking and a website with menus and pics of some of the dishes (I've reviewed it on congokid.com).

To the OP - Brick Lane isn't that far away from the centre of town and has a big choice. Mine would be Cafe Naz.

However, for my money at the cheap end, I've not had better than New Tayyab's in Fieldgate Street, off the Whitechapel Road. The place is unlicensed and the food is v hot, but also good and cheap. I've reviewed it, too.

I'm not the most adventurous of curry-eaters, but I had a very simple take- away chicken dish from sweet and spicy in Brick Lane that was wrapped in a paratha (if I've got my terminology right!) that was one of the most fragrant, tasty things I've had from a take-away. Full of different flavours.

sweet and spicy is fantastic - probably the best place to eat in brick lane, amazing home cooked food....the owner is a former pakistani wrestler and theres loads of great wrestling pictures on the walls... tayyabs has gone down the tubes - of course i am deliberately trying to ruin their reputation - i was as sick as a dog after eating there TWICE, and so were an entire family i recommended it to! And this is after you left the area... i would like this advice from other people, and i am sure other people would like it from me i hope tayyabs goes bust if its going to serve dirty food to a paying public... you have seen the owners big £50,000+ rolls royce or whatever it is parked next door to the restaurant with the TAYYAB number plate... if he can afford that he can afford to inject some basic hygiene standards into his restaurant... If someone eats there and isnt ill the next day then please let us know - it was a great restaurant until the trendies started arriving there in their droves and the quality went right down.

youre damn right there is! i was completely ill, violently so and so were some people i recommended it to. i feel totally disgusted that this restaurant i used to trust now knowingly serve salmonella-ridden dirty food to a paying public. heres an idea... you go and spend your money there and take some family and friends with you and then tell us all how you feel the next day? i would love to hear your feedback. I have eaten in a few quality restaurants for a very long time and NEVER had food poisoning (apart from in india) - 3 times out of 3 from tayyabs in the space of a few weeks is a total disgrace in anybody's book - and any restaurant with that kind of record deserves to go bust. simple.

Chutneys in Drummond Street, Euston, is my second favourite vegetarian Indian restaurant, buffet is 5.95 (eat as much as you want) all day Saturday/Sunday. Food excellent, wide choice, including not curried vegetables & salad on a separate table too. 3 different sweets to choose from on the buffet. (Or have all 3!)

Opens at midday, but be warned if you get there at 1pm it is very busy. Great food.

- Drummond Street, across from Euston station, as posted by Colin

- Southall, a West London suburb - lots of ethnic cafes

- Tooting, South London - there's a great Sri Lankan cafe there, amongst other good places

- Brick Lane area, Eastern London (Brick Lane has gone mostly upmarket, but there are some great places in the surrounding area)

Cheers

Hi,

I hope I'm not too late. You'll be hard pressed to find a better curry=20 restaurant than Chowki in the 'West End' / Soho. It serves real Indian fo= od=20 as it is cooked in homes and in the countries themselves. You will not se= e=20 the standard menu that you see in the vast majority of UK curry restauran= ts=20 that has evolved from 'the English taste for curry'. Chowki is the real=20 deal. Two courses at about =A310-12. Details here:

Chowki -- http://www.chowki.com
2-3 Denman Street, London, W1D 7HA
Nearest Tube Station: Piccadilly Circus
Tel: 020 7439 1330
Fantastic home cooked Indian food just by The Devonshire Arms.

Regards,

I see it's related to Mela on Shaftesbury Avenue, which I rate highly. Have a look at http://www.melarestaurant.co.uk/

What are you after, good food with flock wallpaper and some Indian singer wailing in the background or good food as the locals eat in an Indian greasy spoon? If you want the latter try Sweet & Spicy in Brick Lane or any of the Lahore restaurants down commercial road. I pick Lahore 2 out of choice. Sorry Lahore 1 but you got too expensive and started to cater for too many white people like me!

Steve
