Hello, or should I say "Ni Hao" - first post for me here. I'm a lurking Chinaphile, who went to Beijing a couple of years ago and fell in love with the place. And the food. If anyone is interested there are some pics of my trip here: http://sinfield.org/china/ ...some of which involve embarrassingly over-ordered food. Re: Restaurants - Have you tried Hakkasan? It's not strictly in Chinatown (it's just off Hanway Street, behind the Astoria) but it's excellent. Damned pricy and you'll definitely have to book. But very chic, tremendous food, especially amazing dim sum. Definitely one for a special treat. Cheers, K.

Nice set of pictures from China Karl, pic 21b, banquet scene, i see 4 of you plus person taking picture makes 5... plus the amount of food on table & i suspect more on the way, perfectly normal for an Imperial banquet. In fact, a real Imperial banquet type meal would be more elaborate, with lots of garnishings of veg. carved as decorations taking centre stage of the meal while you picked on small portions of food. What you have on the table looks good enough for us here. Regarding Hakkasan... i think it's good food but many Chinese here would debate about the authenticity & price. Personally for me... it's the price more than anything. Their signature dish of blacken cod selling for what is it? £30+ a plate for a single fillet... we can get that in any good seafood restaurant in Asia, the same price or cheaper for a whole platter of 8-10 pieces. It's basically charred teriyaki alaskan or NZ blue cod. OK the fish might be hard to get but a trip down to Billingsgate will sort that out for you. Thanks for the tip... but sadly my wallet isn't fat enough for Hakkasan to empty just right now heeeheeee. I think it might be a phone call to Royal China or 4Seasons for me & ordering something special off the menu for my guests. DC.
