OK, I went last Friday so here's the deal ...........

In common with most Japanese restaurants, it is expensive and you'd be best off finding somewhere else if you're really hungy but apart from those two familiar gripes, Mon Do is really worth a visit.

My friend and I went for the most expensive set meal option at £ 35 a head - they did go as low (!!!) as £ 22 but the five course chef's choice seemed like fun. The chef (English but trained in Japan I've been told) just cooks up what he thinks is the best, either by quality of ingrediants or simply just what takes his fancy although you can request dishes or just point out preferences, either to include or omit. Our five courses were ...........

1) Dim Sum (5) and Scallops (6) in various sauces. Top quality on both, the were scallops especially good.

2) Chicken Satay, Japanese style (sorry, don't know what that one is really called) (4) and a selection of tempura (6) - again with various sauces and excellent quality and the batter on the tempura was the lightest and cleanest I've had in a long long time.

3) A selection of Maki (8) with ginger and wasabe. Yep, again excellent quality though the wasabe was not the strongest I've had.

4) Pork teriyaki with roast vegetables and beansprouts and fried sole sticks (4) The latter was served in a dish made from it's cleaned and deep fried body - inedible but very pretty. Again, I must say, top quality once more.

5) Ice cream and fruit - home made. A perfect finish !!!

The meal came to £ 85 including a few cokes, glasses of wine and a large measure of saki (around 1/3 a pint at a guess - I wasn't functioning too well mentally after drinking it) and despite me leaving the credit card receipt blank they didn't add any tip or service charge.

Hey, I was feeling reckless :-))))) Makes me wish I'd have left them something on the plate though as the service was very efficient and friendly. Strangely, but who's complaining, the music they played was actually some very fine blues rather than the expected Japanese muzak.

So all in all, a very worthwhile experience. Expensive, yes - but you only live once :-))))))
