Barn Shop near Sizergh on the A591 is good for cheese, some meat, bread, home made cakes etc. Cafe upstairs is good quality, and you can watch the cows being milked while you sip your tea and eat your Cumberland Rum Nicky.

Dutton Arms at Holme (just N of Carnforth) is supposed to be good, but I've never succeeded in finding it, though it's now signposted from the A6. Same ownership as the Miller Howe Kaff in Lakeland Plastics (which is ok).

Punchbowl at Crosthwaite (off the A5074) can be very good if you catch it on a good day, though the good days aren't as frequent as they used to be. Can be a bit of a dour place that takes itself a little too seriously.

Bit far south for you probably, but Campions near Salmesbury near Preston is excellent.

The Snooty Fox at Kirkby Lonsdale is usually reliable, though not stunning.

I've heard good reports of a pub at Beetham (just north of Carnforth). Think it might have been called the Wheatsheaf.

The Glass House at Ambleside can be good, and there's a cafe in Ambleside (can't think of its name - next to and connected to a small deli - think it's called something like Lucy's), which looks a bit whole-foody (though if you're thinking of Melmerby that probably won't put you off) but is pretty high quality stuff.

For some of the best lamb you'll ever buy and cook, go to Mansergh Hall Farm near Kirkby Lonsdale. If you take the B6254 out of Kirkby there are usually signs which lead you on a seemingly endless trek along small lanes, but it's worth it.

Don't think I'd bother, myself. It's a bit too wholewheat flour pastry sort of place. Very worthy. Not denying its got high standards, just not entirely to my taste.

Thanks for all this, although we're back now! We'll return next year and I'm saving this. The Barn Shop was indeed very good.

The Deli -- called something like Luci's-on-a-plate -- had some nice stuff, and the restaurant menu looked delicious.

Next time definitely!

The sausage roll was very tasty, but the gingerbread wan't. I like their Russian breads very much, but of course that's not wholewheat! And their brownies are sinful. :)

Thanks again.
