Someone posted a message a while ago about the London St Brasserie. I've eaten there half a dozen times (which speaks for itself) since then and have been pleased with the two-course lunch offering at UKL12. Decent Chilean chardonnay is UKL15 a bottle. Service is sort of not too bad for a town-centre place with lots of competition for staff, is predominantly female and blonde. Least-favoured of main-course dishes is the homogeneous squid thing but everything else is worth a go. LSB is the best place to eat in Reading. Chronicles (in Valpy St, not the one by Caversham Bridge, which is differently owned if not named) is worth a try, though. Better service and honest-to-goodness type food with a frequently pasta-y bent but usually properly cooked. Of course, Reading isn't somewhere you'd choose to eat. There are several places not too far away that are actually quite good. More on these later, maybe... Anyone else got good news for diners in the Reading/newbury areas? The Castle in Hurst.
The family enjoyed an excellent Sunday lunch there a couple of months ago and the food was good as well as not being excessively expensive.
It has been under current ownership for about 12 months or so and they would appear to be doing quite well. Indeed, come to think of it an outing seems in order.
The Cottage at Maidens Green is well known and always full. Never had a poor meal there - and the portions tend to the very large! On Tue, 22 Aug 2000 12:07:13 +0100, Biffo wrote: > >Anyone else got good news for diners in the Reading/newbury areas?
