The best take aways I've been getting recently are from Al-Khayyam, at the bottom of Halifax Road. I used to get brilliant ones from the Moonlight further up the road, but they seem to have gone over to freezer/microwave technology, as well as factory-produced chicken pieces, so I walked.

The one in Savile Town by the petrol station (the Ambala, but it goes by a better-known name, which I can't remember!) is pretty good too.

Al-Khayyam cooks fresh, mostly (and only uses fresh halal lamb and chicken). You should try their chicken balti, Asian style, and you'll see what I mean.

Ambala precooks and displays the curries under glass. When you order they take out a portion and heat it in the Karhai. This is the only place I buy dals from (I love dal).

The one to avoid, I'm sorry to say, is Akash on Bradford Road. A very successful restaurant with an almost permanent buffet. I've had totally mixed experiences with the buffet, and any take-away almost inevitably comes from the buffet, even late at night after they've cleared it away. I like my curries freshly cooked (even if the base sauce isn't).

I've had one take-away from Raaz, the flashy new place opposite the college, and I've eaten there 3 times. The food is not bad, but it's nothing special. Gets a lot of Asian custom though (as does the Ambala
- they told me 95% of their custom is Asian).

Hope that helps.

There are other places I've only used once or twice where I've been sold a reasonable curry, but given the way a lot of places' quality seems to vary, I wont name them here.
