Curry house report - Dhaka brasserie, Oxford

Dhaka brasserie, Cowley Road Oxford.

Had the Sunday buffet lunch there. £5.95 a head including poppadoms- much cheaper than Fleet where Sunday buffets are £7.95 upwards and popadoms cost £1 each!

There was only one other table occupied in the pplace - my daughter said that the previous Sunday she and her boyfriend were the only customers. How come so many Indian retaurants are empty on Sunday lunchtimes? How can the afford to open? Surely the Sunday buffets they do mean a lot of wastage.

Anyway, I digress. The drinks menu looked good - Kingfisher, Cobra and Lal Toofar on draught, Indian bitter (never heard of that before) in bottles. The reality was that everything was off except Kingfisher.

The buffet consisted of salad, onion bhajis, luminous yellow pilau rice, CTM, lamb balti, a mixed veg dish and aloo channa. We could have had as many poppadoms as we wanted, and a plate of chappattis was brought to the table too. The salad was tired and the rice a very strange colour, but the food was excellent and not swimming in grease as a lot of Indian restaurant buffets are.

Coffee was instant and tepid, tea could have stood the spoon up in it.

Overall - good food, excellent value, shame about the drinks. The CTM was particularly good, the chicken had been very carefully cooked to give it a good tikka flavour without drying out at all. There was a lot of corainder on everything though, and as my husband is severely allergic to it he had to spend ages picking it off. But that's his problem, not theirs.

Incidentally unlike some places they vary the dishes for the Sunday buffet - daughter says that apart from CTM it was a completely different menu the week before. A good sign.
