Xena is El Mirador

Xena is no more. It has somehow made a deal with El Mirador in San Antonio to call itself El Mirador and to use the El Mirador menu. We went to eat at Xena for lunch and since it had changed names we tried El Mirador. The good stuff at Xena is all gone (CIA She Crab Soup). We tried the Mexican special (cheese enchilada, green chicken enchilada, empanada, salad and rf beans) for 9 bucks.

The verdict: Very bland but pretty to look at --- little Mexican taste. It reminded us of the many Mexican restaurants that opened in Manhattan when we lived there. It looked like Mexican food but it had no taste. The NY mexican restaurants would invariably start adding basil to everything about the third week to cater to local preferences. I doubt that El Mirador will become that bad but I also doubt that I will return. I think this restaurant would do well in a tourist district where the visitors don't know what Mexican food tastes like.

There are too many good restaurants in Austin to give this one a second visit.
