Not many choices in San Antonio. The best place I've found is the dining room at the Hilton Palacio del Rio.

Just pretend you did not read the above. But what do you like?? Mexican? Then try La Calesa at Hildebrand and Broadway for the nearest local approach to the food of Mexico's interior. Tex-Mex? Maybe Pico de Gallo, a merry noisy unbuttoned place equally favored by local Hispanics and by visitors. Upscale originality with a southwestern flavor? Restaurant Biga about a mile north of downtown.

Where will you be staying? What budget? etc etc. Tell more for more suggestions. San Antonio is a rather low income town and so has few splendid restaurants but many economical modest ones, some of which are, in their way, extraordinarily good. Ernesto's, for example, is an especially fine Mexican seafood place, and County line (long drive from downtown) is tops in BBQ, unless you want a very basic BBQ shack. The restaurants along the riverwalk are problematical -- a few are vv good (e.g. Zuni), but many seem to have such a good location that they do not put much emphasis on the kitchen. Want unexpectedly extraordinary quality on the northwest side? Try Bistro Time, a small restaurant opened a couple of years ago by a Dutch couple which is now the prototype midscale European restaurant in town. Have to stay on the north side and want a place with a good restaurant? etc etc.

If you are in San Antonio on a Saturday, there is a small Mexican restaurant called El Mirador on St. Marys (about six blocks from the river walk). On Saturday only, until 3:00 PM they serve a heavenly soup (a meal in itself) called Azteca. Everyone I have ever taken there has loved it. This little place has been written up in many national magazines for their soup that is served on Saturday. Except for the pieces of avocado it should be low fat/cholesterol.
