Two years ago I found a deli in San Antonio, Texas near the riverwalk, but not on it that served the best deli sandwiches outside of the East coast. Their signature soup was split pea. I forgot the name. It has been there forever. Name and address please. Thanks.

It is Schilo's (pronounced SHE-low's) at 428 E. Commerce St., as you say, just above the Riverwalk. Until recently they had been a family business since before WWI. Even though they have new ownership, though, the change isn't apparent. The lady who made the split pea soup for a *long* time retired a few years ago, but passed on the recipe to her niece, who does it now.

Probably the most popular downdown lunch spot for locals. Ed, if I can find the review I wrote a few years ago I'll send it along.
