Any other suggestions welcome! You are probably talking about The Oasis Restaurant on Lake Travis. While it it true that it has a great view, the food has much to be desired. If you go you should go strictly for the margaritas and have your dinner elsewhere. One extremely popular place that has relatively good barbeque with a nice atmosphere is the County Line which you can stop at on Ranch Road 2222 on your way back into town from the Oasis. I always take out of town guests there. You probably won't find many locals, though. If you want other suggestions, you should post your request to the austin.general newsgroup. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- David Winters | [email removed] [preferred e-mail address] Austin, Texas | CIS: [email removed] | AOL: [email removed] -----------------------------------------------------------------------

Lamar - where Janis Loplin got her start - reviewed in Mar or Apr Gourmet Magazine, see also "Roadfood". Our governor uses their catering. Excellent Southern/Texan cooking, not fancy, not expensive, large portions. Castlehill Cafe, 1101 W. 5th - nevo SW/Texan cuisine, fancier, pricier but good value. Neither take reservations & get often get crowded. Tom McNelly - Austin

Any other suggestions welcome! You might be thinking of the Oasis. View is spectacular, food is less so. Try Fonda San Miguel on North Loop and Hancock. Especially the sunday brunches. Interior mexican cooking. Terrific. For something kind of pricey, Chez Nous on Neches between 5th and 6th is a nice french restaurant. Papadeaux's on I-35 is great for New Orleans type seafood. It's sister restaurant, Papasitos is merely OK. For BBQ, it is either the County Line or the Ironworks in Austin. Or you can go to the Salt Lick outside of Austin. Way outside of Austin. I would be glad to give you a list if you want to e-mail a request. However, just to follow-up on the suggestion above, lots of locals take out of town guests to the Salt Lick just south of town. It has wonderful barbeque, and on weekends a local band or two would probably be playing while you stand around under the trees and drink Shiner Bock (which you brought with you because it's in a dry precinct! :) ) We recently took friends from Boston, California and London there. They loved it. Just for what it's worth. ................Walter Gibson ................Austin, TX [email removed]

The peacock place would be Green Pastures, hidden away in South Austin. It is very expensive, but excellent. My favorite new place is the Hula Hut, on Lake Austin, by the same people that run Chuy's. I love the Hula Hut, but the food leaves something to be desired... it's more a see-and-be-seen kinda place.
