Don't usually see this place mentioned. We found ourselves hungry in Pflugerville one night. Yeah, not a pretty picture. ;^) After walking into another establishment and being looked at like aliens from another planet (guess there's not too much tourism in Pflug), we decided to try McGowans.

We both had the catfish. One filet was almost big enough to fill a platter. It was deep fried perfectly. The side dishes were not remarkable, IMO. But I will always remember my first bite of the sweet potato pecan pie. I almost dropped my fork, because of the unexpected taste of Chantilly cream (neither of us had tasted that before).

Newspaper clippings on the wall say the owners have (managed? owned?) a restaurant in New Orleans. The husband is the chef, the wife serves tables with a lot of class. The dining area is not crowded with too many tables, and is decorated tastefully. Jazz and blues music creates a comfortable atmosphere. We have never been hurried.

Last time we were there, I had the fried shrimp. They were fresh tasting and delicately deep fried; the breading was like a veil. But, Todd sent a coworker there, and he (a native Louisanan) was very disappointed with the etouffee. So I don't know how cajun food lovers will feel about this place, but we're happy when we have an excuse to go back.
