Pho Cong Ly has 2 locations here in Austin. One is on N. 183 in the same shopping center as Target, and the other is on E. Oltorf right next to Herpeton. Great pho, good prices.

Hi Lane. Hmmmm...I can think of a couple of noodle houses I'd recommend, but the "nice quiest atmosphere" is to some extent a function of the time of day. Tan Tan, which is sorta behind the Target on 183 and Ohlen (?) is quite good, but gets rather noisy at lunch. The other place I'd recommend is, ummm, gee, I think they changed their name again awhile back and for some reason it didn't stick, it used to be Austin Vietnamese (before that Nhatrang, before that Kim Son), it's also off of 183, sort of across the parking lot from Sea Dragon, if you know where that is (perhaps someone else who knows the place can be more precise). I've been cutting back on lunches this past couple of months 'cause I'm extremely busy, but "Austin Vietnamese" might be the place for you, it tended to be relatively quiet even at lunch.

Am a big fan of the Pho Cong Ly up on 183 in the same lot as the Target. It is all pho, however, but inexpensive, very good, and relatively quiet for a family restaurant.

The Thai Noodle House is good and cheap, but hard to find. It's behind the 7-11 on the west side of the drag (26th street?)

Yeah, I think they're run by different people, but the menu at the south store seems the same as the north one. I haven't been to the one up north for a while, so I might be mistaken.

If you were a regular at the 183 location, then you might like to know that the short host guy now works at Pho Huong. This place has great pho. It's up on Burnet, north of 183. I don't know the street name, but if you head north on Burnet, you'll eventually see a Jack-in-the-Box on the left side. It's in the same shopping center.

kitten hmmmmms thoughtfully, "Well, I've never spent a lot of time eating at noodle houses because munky isn't all that crazy about pasta...but I have a friend who just loves Big Bowl Noodle House on Guadalupe...and I've eaten at Fortune Pho on North Lamar...the latter was really good, the atmosphere is kind of...um...collegeish, I guess. Not exactly the kind of place for a romantic laid back dinner or anything. However, it does have the prestige of the banner out front that reads: "The best little pho house in Texas". It's worth dropping by just to see that. ;)"

I guess this thread is rather dead now, but I'd like to mention that I had lunch yesterday at Pho Nam (which is located at the "Vietnamese Restaurant Location Of Doom" that used to be Nhatrang, Kim Son, etc, at approx 183 and Ohlen Road, on the South side of 183 in the building that's across the parking lot from Sea Dragon) and it was really good. The "small" bowl of noodles ($4.00) was more than I could eat and had a rather large meat-to-broth ratio. Quite tasty. And sadly, the place was almost dead at lunchtime, so if you're looking for a quiet spot, this is it.
