Old Alligator Grill on South Lamar is OK, but I've been there when it is fantastic and other nights when it wasn't so good. I think the best is Jazz on 6th Street. I've never had anything bad there and I've been there several times. The cajun food is all excellent, and they have the best onion rings I've ever had anywhere. Enjoy! Lisa P. Austin, TX
great cajun rest. in austin?
NNTP-Posting-Date: Mon, 04 May 1998 14:20:58 CDT Xref: austin.food:1983 'No' would be the simple answer...;) Went for snacks to "The Boiling Pot" during Pecan St. Festival Sunday... the oysters were very fresh and 'oceany', 14 small ones to the dozen... the boudin was the most remarkable I've had this far inland, moist and with complex seasoning. Lime tart was just fair according to my cohort. 90 beers to choose from. Funky cool decor. Our first time there; we'll go back. jay macbride wrote in message ... >Hi! >Can anyone recommend a good cajun restaurant in Austin? >Thanks! >-- >Jay MacBride >[email removed] > >

They don't take reservations, but (I think) you can call ahead and get put on the waiting list. Often the wait will be 45 minutes or an hour, but it's -well- worth it. -df

Their gumbo won 2nd place in the CM gumbo contest a year ago. Other goodies like yummy smoked chicken salad. Cheap, cheap, cheap. 'nuff said...;) jay macbride wrote in message ... >Hi! >Can anyone recommend a good cajun restaurant in Austin? >Thanks! >-- >Jay MacBride >[email removed] > >
There is a great Cajun rest. in Pflugerville. It's called McGowans Cajun Kitchen. The owner/chef apprenticed under chefs in several of the best in New Orleans. He gets his crawfish fresh and they're from La. not the overseas ones. The place is immaculately clean and great service. It's on in toward the old downtown Pflugerville on the right in a small strip shopping center. OTOH, we found Gumbo's to be the *worst* restaurant we've ever been to in or outside Austin. Over-priced, undercooked food; terrible service; and a $30 overcharge on our bill for food we'd ordered but never received; and when we politely informed them of the problems (we had to get up & leave, we couldn't even get the waitress's attention), they argued with us about it most uncharitably. Needless to say, we won't be back, and have no qualms about undermining their patronage w/the info, it was that bad. Haven't been to any other here besides Jazz, which someone already posted, has been consistently excellent food and service every time we've been. Better beans & rice than I've had in New Orleans. :)
NNTP-Posting-Date: Thu, 07 May 1998 01:55:23 CDT Xref: austin.food:2006 We had very mixed feelings on two trips to Gumbo's. We too had undercooked food, a piece of catfish that came out like rubber. We sent it back, they scraped the sauce off, cooked it some more, dumped more sauce back on! What a mess... Their 'fish w/ sauce' type dishes in general were way too greasy and not especially well seasoned. Gumbo was just OK, etouffee was lousy. The cheesecake was truly exceptional however, a sweet-tart masterpiece. All in all though, given the prices, way over-rated imho. I like the Alligator Grill on South Lamar. I also have heard good things about Jazz on 6th street. Alligator Grill usually has coupons in show world on Sundays. jay macbride wrote in message ... >Hi! >Can anyone recommend a good cajun restaurant in Austin? >Thanks! >-- >Jay MacBride >[email removed] > >
