I just moved to Austin two weeks ago and I've found quite a few very good vegetarian restaurants but would like to find out if there are any others I don't yet know about. If you know of any, can you post them here for me?

Thanks.

I've already eating at:

Mother's Cafe and Garden 4215 Duval Road (my favorite!)

The West Lynn Cafe 1110 West Lynn Street (good but expensive)

Veggie Heaven (Chinese) (Forget the address) (very good)

Mr. Natural (Mexican) (on Caesar Chavez) (very good)

I've also eating excellent vegetarian dishes at non-vegetarian places such as Threadgill's and The Kerbey Lane Cafe

I've heard of a place called Martin Brother's Restaurant but don't know where it is. Anyone know?

Martin Brothers is closed. They were on Guadalupe where Mango's is now. They decided that the salad dressing business was better than running a restaurant.

Try the deli at Wheatsville for quick meals

Fortune
(order #59 add spicy garlic..it's better with the fish sauce but they have a veg. peanut sauce that isn't bad)

Clay Pit (Lunch Buffet $6.50 ...only has 2 veg entrees but they are always awesome..plus you get good salads, rice/Daal, and a dessert)

Veggie Heaven on Guadalupe

and for the poster about Threadgill's...the veggie part of the menu shows which veggies are cooked with meat and which aren't...

my fave is the
5 veggie plate w/

Jambalaya
Brocolli Rice Casserole
Black eyed peas
new potatoes
Garlic cheese grits

w/ buttermilk pie and coffee for dessert

and you can have all you care to eat on the veggies..mmmmm

Not strictly vegetarian, but known to be vegetarian-friendly:

Las Manitas. The seemingly impossible... an authentic Tex-Mex restaurant that caters extensively to vegetarians. The vegetarian tamals are one of this omnivore's favorites.

Satay. Thai and regional dishes of the South China Sea. http://www.satayusa.com/satay.htm . Miang Khum is the only vegetarian item I've tried, and it was out of this world.

Magnolia Cafe. Similar to but better than Kerbey Lane imho. Cherry gingerbread pancakes, oh my..:-)

Taj Palace is introducing a "grand vegetarian buffet" for Tuesday nights. I'm not veg, but I love what Indians do with veggies, so I'm planning on going. I'll try to give a report. I'm hoping for chaat dishes, myself.

my favorite restaurant for india food is "sarovar" on burnett just north of anderson. though i obviously haven't eaten at all the indian restaurants in austin i have found most of them to be not very good. sarovar is an exception to this, however, and i recommend it to both vegetarians and non-vegs who enjoy indian food -- i'm a veg but my girlfriend is not and we both like sarovar a lot.

PS: they have a lunch buffet as well but i prefer dinners off their menu.

  "me too" :)

I like the Sarovar buffet because they are pretty clear about what
is what. They separate the vegetarian dishes from the non-vegetarian ones so you don't have to be confused and you don't have worry too much about cross-contamination (I hope that's not too inflammatory for those whose knees have been busy jerking recently - but that is the right term :) caused by sloppy patrons.

The trouble is - I don't know enough about indian food to know what
to order. Perhaps you (or others out there) could post some of your favorites so people like me can have some idea what to get. My knowledge of indian food does not go beyond the frozen indian dinners they sell at central market. (which, by the way, are quite good compared to most microwaved meals)

Threadgills is one of the few places that my wife who is vegetarian and her meat-and-potatoes-and-nothing-with-too-much-flavor sister and niece can agree on... and there's plenty for the rest of us omnivores in the family too.

For vegetarians, they have the three- or five- vegetable plates with very well prepared vegetables. Try the Cajun-Italian eggplant or the roasted new potatoes with green beans, or the texas caviar (basically a black-eyed peas salad). There's a bunch of other things there too, and they're clearly labeled on the menu as being vegetarian and also whether they're non-dairy. (There are other vegetable dishes with meat in them also).
