I'd say that Tocai's cooking ranges from (merely?) good to (nearly?) spectacular, but I would consider it any sort of *extraordinary* restaurant. I suppose that's because of its rather casual decor.

Some others that many consider spectacular:

Jeffrey's (sp?)
Paggi House
Emerald Restaurant
Hudson's On The Bend
Basil's
Zoot
Shoreline Grill

For a nice evening out that isn't TOO stuffy, I LOVE to goto Dan Mc Klusky's... Good food, Good atmosphere, and Good service. Also reminds me a little of home and the Steaksmith in Santa Fe NM.

My wife and I also found Tocai to be seriously overrated (or rather, overpriced). The food was more expensive than what you'd find at Mars, Castle Hill, or Z'Tejas, but so much more boring.

My favorite restaurant for a step above ordinary is Jean-Luc's Bistro on Co= lorado Street, downtown.

The atmosphere is extremely comfortable. The service is the best in Austin=
(especially when we get the extremely friendly french waiter --sounds lik= e an oxymoron, I know). The are attentive without being overly intrusive o= r stuffy. I can't stand overly formal or overly casual wait staff. They = strike the perfect balance there.

And the food really does seem to keep getting better and better. Each tim= e I am happier with the experience than the last.

If you're expecting something seriously hifalutin' and high-brow, this real= ly isn't it. This is earthy, down home cooking, country french style. But=
then, that's the way I like it.
