Best? I don't know, but I have really enjoyed the rellenos stuffed with BBQ-chicken at El Mercado.

I bettcha Matt's El Rancho is worse. Can't think of a place I'll eat relleno's in Austin. Though I have had good ones in San Antonio, Albuquerque and Uruapan, Mexico.

In the old location Matt's El Rancho did a lot of things well, including a wonderful shrimp chili relleno. But every time we've given the new restaurant a chance, they've disappointed us.

Ninfa's on 6th does the best relleno I know of. Only had one, in fact only been their once, but it was a knockout.

I've had the Chile Rellenos at Mothers (The veggie place in Hyde Park on Duval) about 15 times over the past 10 years and 14 times out of 15 they were great. I'm surprised that no one else has posted about this place. The atmosphere is Austin eclectic. The food is always good. Just don't order chicken fried steak.

We like the shrimp rellenos at Nuevo Leon...

(Disclaimer: However, I am usually so tanked on 1/2 of ONE of their margaritas that shoe leather in red sauce would taste good.)

Best ones I've had recently were at that new place where Don Limon's used to be. Something Juarez, I think. Mercado Juarez? They've got a few other restaurants, too.

The shrimp rellenos were great. Not bay shrimp, but nice, big, plump shrimp cut into stuffing sized pieces. Large, spicy poblano, not too much breading, not too much cheese, not greasy. Damn near perfect.

I'm not much on chains, but I've eaten there a few times and it's been at least very good every time. They do a hell of a cabrito, too.

Never eaten there. Rarely make it that far north. Had plenty of soggy, sorry rellenos, though. A lot of them in Mexico.

Cheers,

Try El Rinconcito's Chile Rellenos. Also, Arturo's on around 12th St. and Airport has good chile rellenos at a really great price, especially on their lunch specials (tuesday's I think).
