***************************************************************** I try to say nice things about the eateries if there is anything nice to say. McGowan's, as you point out, is not consistent with their quality. That is why I said 'pretty good' as compared to excellent, great, superb, etc.. I pointed out that the owners are Austinites - not Cajuns - and it shows.

The only true Cajun-quality dish I personally have found - consistently - in Austin is the gumbo at The Captain's Oyster Bar. Other than the gumbo, Captain's does not measure up to pure Cajun, although they come closer than Pappadeaux's. Captain's has a dish they call Piroutte (I'm not sure of s pelling - call it Pea-Row - that is pretty darn good and a favorite of mine. However, sometimes it takes a while to get it and it is not consistent. It is not Cajun however - in spite of its name.
