Javier's is a high spot on a lot of lists of the best Mex fare in Dallas.

You might want to try it out.

Happy dining!

You betcha! At least for TexMex...there are more trad/regional places, but when I am home I address my TexMex jones!

My all-time favorite place is Herrera Cafe. While they have expanded into a local chain, I am still partial to their (kinda) original location. The original 9-seater burned down a few years back and they moved the kitchen to a larger slightly spiffier location down the block and across the street...just west of Oak Lawn on Maple. It is dry there so you would need to BYOB. There are plenty of stores in the area where you can buy a 6-pack or two and a cheap cooler.

If you want mixed drinks you can head to their location off of Denton Drive. Every bit as consistent as the original, just a different vibe altogether...much larger and with a bar.

Any of their other locations would be worthy of a visit for convenience sake, but these two maintain an older school TexMex restaurant feel.

My personal fave dish there is the Jimmy's Special. The combo burrito with guisado is unbelievable. Their salsa is my all-time fave...nuclear hot, but with plenty of flavor and a burn that doesn't get in the way of the flavor of the food. Ole! I used to love this joint called El Chico's. I know some people will scream (and rightfully so) but that place left a positive mark on me... and after the meal I left some positive burn marks on the bed sheets...

I agree with those who recommended Herrera'a, Uncle Julio's, and Mia's for great Tex-Mex, but my personal favorite is Matt's Rancho Martinez on LaVista in the Lakewood area of east Dallas. Chili rellenos and cheese enchiladas are to die for! Good chips and salsa too.

Cuquita's on Henderson is fabulous for authentic Mexican. Language can be a problem but the waiters are very friendly and strive to please.

Mia's on Lemmon Avenue....absolutely excellent, they've been there forever, and get quite crowded, particularly at lunch.

Herrera is very good, yes, on a good day....but when it's bad, it's really bad. I've had some experiences with Herreras that left me not wanting to come back. Sometimes everything's so grease-laden it doesn't fare well with stomachs. Kinda hit or miss as to whether or not it's going to be great that day. That's why I prefer Mia's...they just seem to be more consistent, and I like the patio dining.

This place is really more of a seafood restaurant than a Mexican place...but good regardless.

As for Joseph's recommendation of Javier's...yes, it's VERY good, but a little more pricey, trendy, and upscaled than the others. And it's not Tex-Mex, it's pure Mexican food.
