If you love tex-mex, you probably already have your favorite places staked out. I like Compadre's, Guerro's, and El Arroyo for their special flavors, but for real tex-mex you just can't beat Amaya's Taco Village on I-35 in the shopping center with Montgomery Ward and Toys R Us. However, be warned: that salsa they put on the table with the chips can get pretty hot. Ouch!

Go right ahead. ;-) Agreed, TC's _is_ disgusting. I've eaten at the one on Ben White, the store on Lamar, and the store on Riverside and all of the food was really bad. My wife grew up eating at the original TC's in San Antonio, and she thinks that the food at those stores are gross. TC's in Austin was OK at one time (circa 1985 when they opened the first store on 183) but its really gone downhill. I've also tried Amaya's at Oak Hill and they're also nothing to write home about. When I'm in Bryan, I like to go to a dive called Tampico that has the best papas y nopales around. I wish some place in Austin made them since I've yet to figure how to get rid of the okra-like mucous from the cactus. Maudie's on South Lamar and the other one in West Lake also serves solid tex-mex, but the wait staff at the West Lake location has a lttle too much 'tude for my tastes. "Oh I forgot, you got skills, hon." Yeah, right. There's another place on Oltorf between S. 5th and S. 1st whose name begins with a G that has OK food but their flour tortillas are really good. When I'm east of I-35, I'll go to Neuvo Leon or Mexico Tipico. Come to think of it, there are lots of good tex-mex places all over the city, except where I live. I keep hoping that the local Serranos will fold and be replaced with something that serves edible food. sonny
