SUSHI at Japan Diner - The best thing ever (in PGH)

Okay, I am a sushi addict. Given my first fix about 6 years ago by a friend, I've been shaky-handed ever since. And because of that I've been to (nearly) every Sushi place within an hour of Pittsburgh.

I heard of Japan Diner a month ago, and then saw a thread here about it recently. We went today. Forget about any other sushi bars, the "buffet" deal at JD is not beatable in this area code.

First of all, sit at the bar. Accept nothing less, because you want to be right there to pick your next pieces. The deal is $20 for all you can eat. You get a salad and either miso or mushroom soup. Then you choose, two at a time, from a menu of sushi, both nigiri and maki. There are 35-ish rolls on the menu. Just about any roll you've ever seen or wanted, maki or hand roll, minus "spider" or soft shelled crab. There is also 15 or so nigiri choices, with all of the staples. No uni (sick, sick stuff) nor toro (fatty tuna) but they do have sweet shrimp (amaebi). One warning, they serve them head and all! My wife did not appreciate the asthetics of this presentation.

There spicy style is the mayo based spicy, which I like better than the chili oil spicy, but that's just me. The spicy scallop roll was out of this world, and the spicy tuna hand rolls make you want to move to Penn Hills (which is an armpit, if you haven't been there. Sorry PH people).

Hungry yet?

I've eaten sushi at Sushi Two, Sushi Kim, Sushi Too (Shadyside), Taipei Tokyo, Sushi House (next to Dumpling House, Ginza (on Atwood) and Wholey's (Andy). For value, Andy is very good. All the other places are good, but cost more. Taipei Tokyo's presentation is really good. My daughter has had sushi at Ya Fei in Robinson and liked it. (But she's like Kate --doesn't like raw fish. The closest she'll get is the roe they sometimes put on Califonia rolls. However, she loves avocado.)

The name of the restaurant is Chaya and it's very good. I've eaten
there three times since they opened. It's been on the high side of
moderately expensive ($20 -$30 dollars per person) each time.

It's a fairly small place, with seating for only about 20-25 people.

You're right Mike. I've eaten there and it is good. I don't know if I'd
call it new, since it has been there several years. Maybe it has changed
owners. Pretty similar to Sushi Kim IMHO, and the strip is much closer to
 me.

Besides, if I'm eating in Squirrel Hill, I'm going to the Chinese place
across from Giant Eagle at the top of the hill, and getting their General
Tsos. It is THAT good. Mmmmm, so crunchy.

I have to disagree. Sushi Two should be the LAST place in PGH (and there
are quite a few) on your list. It just doesn't stack up. Lets compare
their AYCE to Japan Diner :

Japan Diner (JD) - $20 bucks
 Sushi 2 (S2) - $25 bucks

 edge, JD. 1 - 0

JD - nearly all encompassing menu to choose from
S2 - must eat 5 dishes IN ORDER that THEY pick, before you can get what you
 want

For anyone not a sushi pro, you won't make it past the second plate, half of
it is stuff you wouldn't choose to eat. And forget it if you only like
 cooked stuff.

 edge, JD. 2 - 0

JD - buffet every day, any time
S2 - only Tuesday nights, maybe only 2 times a month (can't remember)

 edge, JD. 3 - 0

 JD - soup and salad
S2 - soup and salad AND tempura

I'm not there for tempura, but I'll be fair.

 edge, S2. 3 - 1

I could keep going, but you get the idea. Quality wise Japan Diner wins.
 Atmosphere is about the same.

You are talking about the Dynasty Buffet. There is one in Cranberry Twp less than two miles from my house. I've eaten there dozens of times, and mostly ate the buffet sushi. Haven't been there in two months since I fiirst ate at Japan Diner. Not even in the same ballpark quality wise.

Overall it IS a decent buffet. Good mix of food, can take a picky crowd there and do alright. I'm just a Sushi snob.

Just had lunch at JD today. God their sushi is good.

What a disappointment. I have been to sushi joints all over the country in in Tokyo too and have had some really great sushi... Not here.... This was an embarrassment to the concept. First thing was that despite the place being 90% empty, no waitress came over. After 10 minutes I walked up and grabbed our own menus. Finally when we got the attention of a server we tried to order. The "all you can eat" sushi is a scam! They get away with this by really sloooowing dowwwwwn the service preventing you from ordering enough to make it worthwhile. We felt ripped off. It took them over an hour to bring the food. We were there for nearly 2 hours and they never brought our 2nd helping of sushi until we basically put coats on and started to make noises like we would leave. Then they gave it to us to go. The miso soup was dilute and weak and literally a pale representation of what good miso soup should be. I suspect that this is a restaurant run by Chinese people making an approximation of sushi in an attempt to cash in on the strength of the rising acceptance of Japanese culture and food in this country. I overheard the staff speaking and recognized them as speaking Chinese. As I paid the man for our sadly disappointing dinner I looked at him and said "Boo Hau" - Chinese for "no good!." He understood me and made a weak attempt at an excuse - "waitress called in sick." Looking at the nearly empty restaurant I began to feel sorry for the man - he has no sense of how to run a restaurant.

I'm late coming into this threat, but I just wanted to mention the 'oriental palace' on McKnight Road (next to BestBuy) that has ayce, made- to-order sushi in its buffet. There are a few things premade, but there's a sushi chef who'll make things for you, preferably after you tip him. I actually found the unagi there better than when I ate at Sushi Too.

Yes it is. We went there again last week. I had the AYCE sushi "buffet" for $19.95. It's not really a buffet, as it is all made to order. You get to chose from a list of about 35 different rolls, and 15-20 different types of nigiri sushi. I counted about 14 different vegetarian options, but didn't try any. I was there for the fish.

We sat at the bar. My wife ordered a few pieces ala carte, she doesn't have the appetite to justify AYCE. I ordered 5 different types of sushi from the buffet menu to start. Miso soup and a small salad are part of the buffet (some filler I suppose.) After the first round I ordered 2 at a time till I had my fill. The salmon and tuna were the best I've ever had. I also sampled the squid, snapper, and eel and all were excellent.

The bill came to about $38, our usual amount when we both order ala carte, but this time I was very pleasantly full.

I think we are going to start going there weekly... it's just too good to resist.
