Great new Sushi in SF's Sunset

Stumbled across this out-of-the-way place in SF's Sunset district last week. It's called 'Toyose' and it's on Noriega between 45th and 46th. It's a remodelled garage, and looks just like the more traditional sushi places I remember from Japan. VERY nice ambiance, with 'enka' playing in the background. The chef did all the woodworking and drawings himself.

Prices are about typical for a sushi place BUT if you're hungry and don't have a lot to spend, you have got to try the chirashi-zushi; for those of you who don't know, this is a variety of sashimi placed over a bowl of sushi rice. Only a couple places in SF do chirashi, and this is by far the best. Small portion is $12, and it has about 9 different kinds of sashimi. The such itself is very good, certainly as good as I've had in the States in a LONG time. It's the "joro" style, which is a a long piece of sashimi over the rice; ie, pretty big pieces.

All in all, the best sushi place I've been to in SF; as good as a lot of places in Japan. It's open Thurs-Tues from 4:00pm to midnite. Phone # is (415)731-0232.

Try this place out; you won't regret it!

Mike

(PS - no, I didn't get paid for writing this. It's simply a great sushi bar)
