Seeking restaurants in Barcelona

My abridged reviews of three places in Barcelona visited this February 95.

El Cangrejo Loco, Moll de Gregal 29, Port Olimpic, 221 05 33

The Port Olimpic, built for the '92 Olympics of course, is a large marina by the Med. with shops and dozens of bars and restaurants. The "mad crab", as I understand the translation, is on two levels and double fronted and with al fresco eating can apparently serve 500 covers all day
>from 1PM until the early hours. In glorious early February sunshine and
an artists dream of fabled Mediterranean light we enjoyed lunch outside on both the Saturday and Sunday.

Excellent range of modern and classic seafood dishes with prime ingredients at very reasonable prices (set menu a bargain, UKL 50 including wine)

El Caballito Blanco. Mallorca 196, 08036 Barcelona. phone 453 10 33 This is a simple restaurant that could be in any Mediterranean city with only the paintings giving any Spanish hints.

We started with salt cod with tomato, parsley, olives and olive oil. It smelt like a fishing boat landing it's catch and tasted divine. Our other choice was small green beans cooked with small cubes of mountain like ham and served warm.

A large local sausage with fried white beans was simple and nice and tasty. Thin cutlets of goat deep fried in batter and served with limp chips was a poor choice. Goat is pretty tasteless anyway and had no chance with competing with the batter.

The staff were friendly, helpful and fast plus they could translate most dishes into English. The bill was UKL 35. Choose carefully.

Roig Robí, Séneca 20, 08006 Barcelona. phone 212-92-22

Roig Robí does a brilliant job of looking quite swish but without using flash or luxury fittings and is also a haven from the narrow and drab section of street it finds itself. The staff were welcoming and friendly and the tables large and well spaced.

Modern cooking with local ingredients that works well most of the time. UKL 56 for 2 with wine, pretty reasonable.
