The Peninsula Grill at the Planter's Inn is just fabulous.

We had one of our best meals ever there.

Thanks for the hints on where to eat in Charleston -- duly noted, archived and will definitely try out your recommendations. In the meantime, son and wife ended up at Brett's, Maybank Highway on the way to James Island and Folly Beach. Add that one to your list: They glowed when they got home, and ranked it with the best restaurants ever. Perfect service, fantastic food, not outrageously expensive, generous portions, and they're taking me there for my birthday. They mumbled happily about carpaccio with truffle oil, tuna tartare, beef tartare, foie gras, creme brulee, intelligent salads ... I don't think they ever got out of the appetizers!

Greetings Birgitta

Charleston has some very fine, fine dining. We had great meals at the Charleston Place Grill and Louis's.

But....

I'd much rather throw on my oldest set of clothes, and head south to James Island and seek out either Bowen's Island for roasted marsh oysters by the shovelful or Mr. Bakhman's Fish Market for white shrimp - the top of that day's catch - steamed and served in the rough.

You can get fine french dining in any major city, probably at a higher level than Charleston, but you won't fine fresher shrimp than those from Mr. Backman nor as complete a dining adventure as found in an oyster roastin' shack on Bowen's Island.

Both happen to be shown, complete with pics, in the "To Charleston For Oysters" section of www.HollyEats.Com.
