We just went to Newport for the weekend last week-it looks like there are a ton of great places to eat. We ate at Mamma Luisa's on Thames St. The food was e xcellent, real Italian. The restaurant is small and very cozy. The owner was obviously from Italy, accent and all. Highly recommended.

I second that recommendation. I had forgotten the name of the place. Wonderful, wonderful, wonderful. The place is intimate and cozy, but not in a generic way. It's got character, without being at all pretentious. Countless little details that make the entire dining experience an excellent one (e.g. first rate EV olive oil on the tables, opera for background music, lots of extra touches on the plate.) Even the little dessert of mandarin orange sorbetto(sp?) was remarkable in flavor and was served in an intact tangerine peel that had been sugar glazed, filled with the sorbetto, and frozen. The rest of the food was fantastic too.

We were there three years ago, and I seem to recall the place is named Benjamin's.. Great place! In any case it's on the main drag, Bellview Ave., and it's a door or two away from the fancy tennis club.
