Hi > I like hot wings. Anybody have some favorite places? I started with > this when we used to go down to the S.O.D. in South Oakland for beers > after finite-element analysis class. Charlie's -- without a doubt. If you've never been there, it's the hole-in-the-wall. It's on Melwood in Oakland right before Centre Ave (behind Mitchell's Tavern, across the street from the Giant Eagle) Last time I was there, the door and steps leading up to it was painted purple, but that tends to change. And they count all three parts (wing tip to drumette) as one wing, so they're huge. Fantastic cheesesteaks as well, but you weren't asking about that. A word of warning: they do not accept credit cards, so make sure you have cash on you. However, when my husband and I go, we spend about $25 for wings, cheesesteaks, fries, drinks (non-alcoholic), and tip. > I've been very disapointed in "Quaker Steak and Lube." For a place that > has the walls plastered with quotes about how fabulous their wings are, I > was ready for something really special. I've been to the one out in Robinson twice. The first time was disappointing: the wings were bland, and not very hot. We ordered the atomic level and had no problems whatsoever eating them. I would have considered them a 7 on a level of 1-10 with 10 being the hottest. The second time was equally disappointing. The wings were again not flavorful. We ordered the atomic level again, and this time they were too hot to eat. Not flavorful at all, just so much capacin and vinegar to render them inedible. I don't think I will try them a third time. Wings!
FatHead's (near the corner of 18th and Carson St on the southside) puts
most wing places to shame. They have a good variety of wings, and their
traditional hot wing is extremely good.
Special wings to try:
The Spicy Parmesan Wing (original hot wing rolled in Parmesan cheese...
simply amazing.) and the Sesame Mustard Wing. For a good very hot
wing try the Caribbean Killers, hot yet still very flavorful.
Special wing prices on Monday and Wednesday after 7pm.
