I would safely say this is the best place for German food. It's on the
pricey side, but worthy of the price.

Allegheny Brewery (I refuse to call it by it's new
name which was a totally ridiculous and unnecessary
change. ;-)) has okay food but the beer is awesome.
Unless you're really into oom-pa-pa music try to
go when they're not having it. A little of that
goes a really long way. ;-)

I've only been there once but the food was
great. I had the hasenpfeffer. It was
delicious. I really liked it and have wanted
to go back ever since but just never seem to
get around to it, mainly due to the area -
I just don't seem to get over to the North Side
much. Hopefully the service has improved. My
big complaint was that I wanted bread with my
salad and the waitress said they don't serve
the bread until they bring the entrees. I had
to bitch to get my bread and it still took way
too long to get it. What's the big deal about
bringing the bread with the salad anyway? Are
they afraid people will eat too much bread or
what? Anyway, if you have the same problem
stand up for your rights! Don't let them
push you around. The customer is always right!

And not mentioned is Kleiner Deutschman in
Springdale. Pretty good food, a little more
expensive than I like but I guess it would be
classified as moderately priced. (Okay, so I'm
 cheap.)

 The 'review' from WQED

A Kleiner Deutschmann, 643 Pittsburgh St., Springdale, 724/274-5022. Kitsch
and gemutlich in a big multicolored house. Traditional German country dishes
(sauerbraten, spaetzel, pork and sauerkraut) are cooked from scratch and
served in huge portions at moderate prices. Bells ring when you order the
 4-pound, five-hour-braised veal shank. T-Sat, 5-10pm. c R s $$

There are at least two really good ones:

      Penn Brewery
      Max's Allegheny Tavern

Both are on the North Side.

Penn Brewery does have better beer (it brews its own), and
 Max's has a bigger menu.

I've taken out-of-town guests to both places.
