Spice Islands Tea House--Review

1 post · Mar 8, 1995

We tried the Spice Islands Tea House (Atwood Street in Oakland, on the
left hand side as you head away from Forbes--about a block past that
new office building going up on the other side of atwood) and the
consensus is we will be going back.

The menu was varied and EVERYTHING looked interesting. My wife and
I had a hard time picking just two dishes for dinner. I had the
Rangoon Night Market Noodles--thin rice noodles tossed in garlic oil,
topped with finely shredded roast pork and green onions. My wife
had a mango pork curry that was served with a wedge of paratha, a
timbale of rice topped with shredded (and fried?) coconut and there was
one other thing on the plate that slips my mind. My 5 1/2 year old son
had two shrimp spring rolls. It was all _very enjoyable_.

The service was very attentive and very infomrative (I'm certain the
two gentlemen serving are also the proprietors). They know about all
the dishes on the menu and answered questions from everyone in the place
ably. When my son asked for some dipping sauce for his spring roll he
was provided with a dish of a salty plum sauce with diced peanuts which
was very good. My wife's curry had real flavor and my noodles were
just what I was hoping for.

Nothing was particularly spicy but I suspect they would be happy to adjust
spiciness to any level you desired. They guy who took our orders even
told me when I ordered the noodles that they would be a little oily. This
was fine with me but it goes to show the kind of service they offer--they
want to be sure you know what you are getting and that you'll enjoy it.

No alcohol but Non-Alc beer, lots of tea, water, etc. I did notice one
table brought their own beer and beer glasses were immediately supplied.

Price for two entrees, two orders of tea (both refilled--they come in pots)
the spring rolls, and tip....just over $17. We'll be back and I recommend
 the place to others.
