Saturday night we swung by the new Rudy's Subs on Murray Avenue in Sq Hill and picked up two sandwiches. One was an italian with everything including hot peppers, the other was a Rudy's special steak (comes with mushrooms and peppers) with lettuce and tomato. The steak was nothing to write home about--although this may be because it was 20 minutes old by the time we got around to eating it. Still it was filling. The italian was a good italian. The sandwiches are very large. Two sandwiches and an order of onion rings fed three of us with leftovers. Large sandwiches are on something like a small loaf of bread (a bit larger than your typical large SUBWAY roll). The place may be a bit pricey. The two sandwiches and the onion rings came to about $14. I've no idea how that compares to other places or how the size/value comparison works out. But I will say you could do worse. Also, although the last two places to occupy this spot were Kosher the pork based cold cuts in my italian indicate Rudy's isn't. A bit of history from the brothers who own the franchise. 20 or so years ago this location was the origianl Rudy's. Then they were accross the street where Aiello's is now. Then the Sq. Hill business dropped off and franchises in places like Swissvale opened. So now they are back where they started. I'm likely to go back. They have menus and you can phone ahead for takeout. Jeff

Rudy's Subs on Murray
Excerpts from netnews.pgh.food: 30-Jan-95 Rudy's Subs on Murray by Jeffrey P. One was an italian with > everything including hot peppers, the other was a Rudy's special > steak (comes with mushrooms and peppers) with lettuce and tomato. I went to Rudy's tonight for dinner and had the chicken Italian, while my friend had the special steak you mentioned. While both the sandwiches were large, they weren't particularly good. The bread wasn't good, especially when compared to the bread on subs from Sorrento's or Uncle Sam's. The meat was okay, but there weren't enough vegetables to notice and the tomato sauce was rather bland and boring. The onion rings reminded my friend of his dining hall experiences as an undergraduate and I wasn't sure if I'd say they were even that good. All in all, I'm hoping that yet another restaurant will appear on that corner and that it'll finally be a good one. I'm going to stick with Sorrento's or Uncle Sam's (or maybe even Subway) for my subs and avoid Rudy's. James "Truth decays into beauty, while beauty soon becomes merely charm.
